At Dunseith Day School, we are committed to ensuring students access safe and reliable transportation. Please review the following guidelines and procedures for riding the school bus.

Bus Rules

Riding the school bus is a privilege. Students are expected to follow all transportation rules and demonstrate respectful behavior. Unacceptable behavior or violation of bus rules may result in restrictions or suspension of bus privileges. Below are the expectations for all students riding the bus:

  • The bus driver oversees all students during the ride.
  • Students may be assigned seats by the bus driver when necessary. This assignment is mandatory.
  • Students must always remain seated while the bus is in motion.
  • Students are expected to keep their heads, hands, arms, legs and feet inside the bus.
  • Throwing items inside or outside the bus is strictly prohibited.
  • No fighting is allowed on the bus.
  • Students must use appropriate language and be respectful to peers and staff.
  • Students must respect the bus and its property and help keep it clean.
  • Prohibited items include firearms, weapons, animals, explosives, breakable glass, or other dangerous objects.
  • Students must board the bus safely and avoid pushing, shoving or running alongside the bus.

Consequences for Major Offenses

Students who commit major offenses (as outlined in the Discipline Action Plan) will face the following consequences:

  • First Major Offense: The student will lose bus privileges until a meeting occurs between the parent, student, bus driver and principal. The principal will determine the duration of the suspension from the bus.
  • Second Major Offense: The student may lose bus riding privileges for the remainder of the school year. If a student loses bus privileges due to misconduct, the parent must provide transportation to and from school. It is crucial to arrange alternate transport if bus privileges are revoked.

Bus Change Requests

If you need to request a change to your child's bus schedule, please notify the front office by 2:00 p.m. on the day of the change. All bus changes should be submitted in writing to ensure students are placed on the correct bus. Last-minute requests may not be accommodated.

Bus Driver Responsibilities

In compliance with School Board Policy 552.4, the bus driver will wait up to two minutes for students to board the bus at each stop. In certain cases where the distance from the bus stop to the child’s home is significant, the driver may allow additional time for students to reach the bus.

Inclement Weather

In severe weather, notifications will be sent via the school’s phone notification system, Dunseith Day School’s Facebook page, and the local radio stations at Belcourt and Bottineau. Please ensure your contact information with the front office is up to date.

In the event of sudden storms during the school day, classes may be canceled early. We will make every effort to provide safe transportation home. Students will not be released from the bus unless a responsible adult is present at home to supervise them.

For any further questions or concerns regarding transportation, please contact the Dunseith Day School office.
